You (non-European guys) might have heard about the European Soccer Championship.
Last Sunday, there was this match Germany against Austria and the Swiss TV used subtitles for the commentaries of the game.

Unfortunately, when the national anthem was sung, what they showed was not the third stanza (which is the actual hymn) of the "Deutschlandlied" but the first... which served as the national anthem during Hitler's Nazi regime...
And while - against general belief - it's not forbidden to sing it, the connotation is obvious to all Germans and to most Europeans as well.

I'm totally free of any "original sin" conscience concerning Germany's past - but the thought of foreign people thinking that this is the way we praise our country is giving me the creeps.
